Is it possible to achieve efficiency in data protection supervision by public authorities alone? Which possibilities are opened up by the function of an internal personal data protection official in the place of the controller? How should his/her role be best understood, practised and developed to support public data protection authorities? In her article the author gives an overview of the tasks of internal and external data protection supervision. She outlines the historical developments of both functions and compares given statutory powers and their practical efficiency. On the basis of critical questions, synergy potentials will be highlighted between internal and external data protection supervision in the areas definition of data protection objectives, implementation of measures and performance control.
